Portable sex machines that fit in a drawer or a carry-on
Not everybody has a spare room for a 25 lb machine, and not everybody wants their roommate finding one in the hall closet. These are the small ones, the machines you can lift with one hand, hide in a drawer or take on a trip.

From 1 lb to 7 lb: how small these really are
Weight tells you more about how portable a machine really is than any product photo, so here they are from lightest to heaviest, going by the makers' own numbers:
- CalExotics Overdrive Waterproof Thruster: 1.05 lb, battery, waterproof
- Lovense Spinel: 1.3 lb, battery
- Auxfun Neo: 2.8 lb, plugs into the wall
- Hismith Capsule: 2.9 lb, battery
- Hismith Pro Traveler 2.0: 4.4 lb, plugs into the wall
- Lovense Mini Sex Machine: 7 lb, plugs into the wall
A battery means you can use it anywhere, while a plug usually means a stronger motor but you'll need an outlet nearby.
My pick if you only read one paragraph
The Hismith Capsule. It weighs 2.9 lb, runs for up to an hour without a cord, takes the whole range of Hismith dildos, and comes with its own carry bag. If you just want the cheapest proper machine and have an outlet nearby, the Auxfun Neo starts at EUR 79.
What "portable" means on this page
For this guide, a portable machine is one that's light enough to carry with one hand, small enough to put away after every use, and still hands-free, so it has a stand or a suction cup and you don't have to hold it. That rules out handheld thrusting dildos. If size doesn't matter to you, a full-size thrusting machine will give you longer strokes for the money.
Where small machines fall short
Small machines have short strokes, from under half an inch to about 3 in here, so they're not for people who love long, deep strokes. Most of them stick down with a suction cup, which only grips smooth surfaces like tile or glass. And small motors aren't always quiet ones: only the two Lovense machines here publish a dB figure, and Hismith calls its own Capsule and Pro Traveler "noisy".

Lovense Mini Sex Machine
$399 on sale when checked (the maker lists two different full prices)
Best for: People who want a compact machine with an adjustable stroke, app control a partner can use from anywhere, and a published noise figure.
What it does well
- You can adjust the stroke up to 3 in, which suits slow, shallow play

- Vac-U-Lock fits lots of dildos you can buy elsewhere, including slim anal ones

Alternative sex machines you should consider
If you're looking at the Hismith Pro Traveler 2.0 because of the word "traveler", look at the Capsule first. Going by the listings, it weighs less, runs without a cord, and costs EUR 20 less. And if you want a small machine for anal, skip the Lovense Spinel, because the maker says it's for vaginal use only. Look at my anal machine guide instead.
Travel, privacy and noise questions
What is a portable sex machine?
A portable sex machine is a small, light thrusting machine that you can tuck away in a closet or pack in a bag. The ones in this guide weigh between about 1 lb and 7 lb, and some run on a rechargeable battery so you don't need an outlet nearby.
Can I take a sex machine on a plane?
In the US, the TSA generally allows sex toys in both carry-on and checked bags. Spare lithium batteries have to go in your carry-on, and it's easiest to keep anything with a built-in battery there too. Rules change and differ by airline and country, so check the TSA's "What Can I Bring?" page and your airline before you fly. Use the travel lock if your machine has one, so it doesn't switch on in your bag.
Are portable sex machines as good as full-size ones?
They're different, not worse. Small machines usually have shorter strokes and weaker motors, so they suit people who like shorter, faster movement or are just starting out. If you know you like long, deep strokes, a full-size thrusting machine will suit you better.
Which portable sex machine is the quietest?
It's hard to say, because most makers don't publish a number. Lovense lists its Mini Sex Machine at 60 dB, and Hismith openly describes its Capsule and Pro Traveler as "noisy". If you share thin walls, pick a machine with a published dB figure.
Before it goes in your bag

Check whether the seller ships in unmarked packaging, and look at the returns policy, because several of these makers won't take anything back unless it's faulty. When it arrives, charge it fully before the first use, wash the dildo, and keep it in a clean bag between uses. And if anyone asks what's in the carry bag, it's a travel steamer.
